Fit and Function: What's The Ideal Muck Boot For You?
Consider the muck boot the only thing standing between you and a soggy ride on a muddy day. Muck boots are hardy by nature, but that doesn’t mean they can’t also be stylish. They can range from upscale and sleek, to simple and more ‘rustic.’
But how do you know what is the ideal pair of muck boots for you? Here are some key elements to keep in mind.
To be clear -- a good muck boot is a bit different than rain or irrigation boots. Where many rain boots have laces, and irrigation boots are loose-fitting but smooth, muck boots fill the niche in between.
The sleekest muck boot won't have any laces or crevasses that can trap mud on the outside and will be waterproof enough that your feet stay dry. (You can even hose these boots off.) And unlike many irrigation boots, you'll want a tighter fit to keep your feet from slipping while you “play around” in the mud.
Some muck boots do feature laces, which can make them tougher to clean…but also more versatile. This means that if you need to take off across a field to chase that one horse that always escapes, you won't have to change your footwear first!
So you first should decide whether you want to have an easy-to-clean muck boot or one that works better for hiking and all-around work while still handling the mud. The choice is yours.
When sizing muck boots, you should try for a happy medium. You want a comfortable boot but one that you can also quickly slip-on.
A good muck boot size will hug around your foot like a shoe. And again - muck boots generally don't have laces, so you'll need to experiment with sizes. You still want to find something that can slide on and off easily without too much struggle.
If you're stuck between two sizes, go for the larger size. It's almost always better to have a little more freedom of movement than to cut off circulation. You can always throw on an extra pair of socks if necessary!
What Should You Look For in a Muck Boot?
Good muck boots will be able to handle all of your messy, muddy jobs while keeping your feet dry and comfortable. Men's, women's and unisex boots are all available to ensure you can find your perfect fit.
While finances are tight for many people, especially farmers and ranchers, it's impossible to overestimate the value of a good pair of boots. While it can get pricey, good footwear is a great investment that can pay off for years to come.
If you have the chance to try on different boots, slip them on and off a few times, to see how well they fit. Obviously, a boot falling off your feet isn't a good fit, but neither is one you need a shoehorn to get into.
One thing you don’t have to put too much thought into when buying muck boots: color. These things are made to get dirty and muddy, so don't feel like you need to make a fashion statement with them. (Although if you really feel like it, those fuchsia and orange-striped boots will certainly stand out the next time you arrive at the stable.)
