The complete turnout blanket buying guide

It is critical that your horse is well protected from any adverse weather conditions whether it be snowing, lashing with rain or blistering sunshine. In the case of the colder weather that fall/winter brings, a quality turnout blanket is an important piece of equine equipment. Turnout blankets can help keep your horse warm and dry and are available in various different weights, dependent on the weather, and the time of year.

Here at Country & Stable US, we stock a wide range of turnout blankets for all seasons, sizes of horse, and weather conditions. If you’re looking to purchase a turnout blanket for your horse, but aren’t sure where to start, our handy guide can help!

When considering which turnout blanket to choose, think about the following factors:

  • Breed, age and size of the horse - An older horse will require greater protection; a larger horse will need extra space to manoeuvre.
  • Style of the blanket - perhaps you want an eye-catching design?
  • Blanket fabric - will you require full waterproofing?
  • Use of blanket - will your horse be outside for a long period of time?

How do I know if my horse requires a turnout blanket?

As the cold season hits, fall is usually the time to protect your horse from the chill. You can do this by purchasing a turnout blanket. Just like us, if your horse is too cold, it is likely that their hair will be standing on end. You can also touch their nose and the top of their ear to determine if they are feeling comfortable. Don’t let the cold set in - horses get ill too, so act quickly and have a turnout blanket ready. If your horse does need a blanket, use our handy blanket fitting guide before buying.

Turnout blanket weights….

Turnout blankets are available in a number of weights. In the colder months, it is advisable to move towards medium and heavyweight turnout blankets. Medium weights can range in fill levels and weight ranging from 200g up to 400g.

Of course, the weight of turnout blanket that you choose relies heavily on the temperature of your location and of course your horse! As with humans, every horse is different and some get colder quicker than others. This is especially the case if your horse is clipped.

What size turnout blanket should I buy?

It is recommended that you measure from the centre of your horse's chest to the centre of the tail. Use the table below to help with measurements, though before buying turnout blankets online, we always recommend finding an accurate recording by measuring your horse. Top tip: If your horse happens to be in between sizes, always size up!
